The UK authorities has added an additional eleven new countries to its official warning register concerning the dangers of toxic alcohol toxicity from tainted spirits.

The updated warning covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following reports of "a global increase in the frequency of documented incidents" of industrial alcohol poisoning.

Just a few weeks ago, authorities had previously included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing roster, in response to several serious incidents such as the deadly loss of half a dozen travelers in Laos in 2024.

Travelers are being advised that as little as small amounts of methanol can cause blindness or loss of life within 12 to 48 hrs.

Exactly what is Methanol and In what way is it Used?

Industrial alcohol is a poisonous chemical commonly utilized in coolant, windshield wiper fluid, and thinner. It is not intended for human consumption.

Although it is inherently formed during the creation of beverages, licensed producers bring it down to non-dangerous concentrations for ingestion through the purification method.

But in certain nations, it is illegally mixed into beverages to reduce expenses, and since it is tasteless and odourless, it is extremely challenging to detect.

Government Guidance for Tourists

Foreign Office official a senior official stated that all travellers should recognize the signs of industrial alcohol poisoning.

"While drinking spirits abroad, choose reputable establishments and refrain from local brews or complimentary drinks," the minister said.

"If something feels off, for example a headache that's far more intense than normal or vision problems – get medical help immediately."

The entire register of countries identified as carrying a threat of industrial alcohol poisoning now includes: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
