Former FBI chief James the former director has pleaded not guilty to providing misleading information to congressional representatives and hindering a congressional proceeding.

His legal representative entered the plea representing him in a US district court in the Virginia city of Alexandria on Wednesday morning.

The defense lawyer stated he would seek to have the legal matter dismissed for multiple causes including that his client, a opponent of Donald Trump, was being targeted.

Mr Comey was indicted soon after Trump pressured his top legal official to proceed against him.

Judicial Process

During the hearing on mid-week, his attorney Mr Fitzgerald informed the magistrate they intended to present multiple motions to dismiss the legal matter before a legal hearing, stating the prosecution was vindictive and that a US attorney was unlawfully designated to handle the case.

James Comey's proceedings was first managed by a Virginia prosecutor, who resigned under influence from the former president after his investigation into a different opponent - New York Attorney General Letitia James - did not succeed to bring criminal charges.

Courtroom Atmosphere

The former director came across in positive mood as he came into the legal venue on Wednesday, chatting with his lawyers and making jokes. He was joined by his wife, Patrice Failor and child Maureen, a federal prosecutor who the former government terminated.

Upon hearing to the judge state his constitutional guarantees and the two counts against him in court on mid-week, Mr Comey was inquired if he understood the allegations.

"Yes your honour. Appreciate it," he stated to the proceedings.

Historical Information

James Comey was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 2013 to 2017 and was terminated about a few months into Trump's first term as national leader. At the period, the director was leading an probe into international campaign influence and whether there were any connections between the Russian government and the election effort.

Throughout his leadership, James Comey triggered a counter-response from liberal politicians when he stated just immediately preceding the 2016 election that he was investigating political contender Clinton's use of a personal email system. Legal actions against the candidate were not pursued, resulting in disapproval from conservative politicians as well.

Current Allegations

Prosecutors allege the former director provided false information to the legislature during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in recent years when he was being interrogated about both the previous examination as well as the Russia election probe. They claim he deceived the upper house by saying he had not permitted a person at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to release to journalistic entities information about the FBI investigations.

Legal representatives also allege James Comey of "corruptly endeavoring to sway, hinder and delay" the committee by making false statements to it.

Individual Responses

Through a recording James Comey posted to his social media after he was charged, he declared he was not guilty and accused Donald Trump of behaving like a "tyrant".

"We have understood for a long time that there are costs to opposing the former president," he commented. "We refuse to live on our knees."
"I am not guilty," he added. "So let's have a legal proceeding."

These allegations against James Comey came after Trump posted on digital channels demanding his top legal official, Pam Bondi, take legal action against the former director and other people.
